How you start your morning can set the tone for the rest of the day. So, starting with intent and purpose is a sure way to be on route to success. We have put together a few tips that highly successful people follow.

Rise with the sun

Studies show that people who wake up with the birds are 36% more likely to be productive. It’s no wonder that many successful people have been referred to as early birds. The Journal of General Psychology found that early risers tend to procrastinate less than those who wake up later in the day. Our brains tend to be most alert early in the morning which enables us to think more clearly and make better decisions. Additionally, there are generally fewer interruptions early in the morning. If you can manage to get out of bed early, you’ll find that you have more energy throughout the day. For those who struggle with sleeping on time and waking up early, here are a few tips for you:

Prepare your sleep environment. Getting adequate sleep starts with preparing your sleep environment and your body for rest. Make the room as dark as possible and turn off blue light from cell phones and alarm clocks.

Avoid hitting the snooze. While you may think you’re doing yourself a favour by giving yourself an extra 10 or 15 minutes of sleep, hitting the snooze will only serve to increase your frustration and reduce the calm state needed in order to be productive.

Avoid looking at your phone as soon as you open your eyes. Many of us start the day with a quick check of our emails, social media, or the news. But that’s exactly what successful people don’t do. Instead take a minute to be mindful, grateful, and affirm how your day is going to go.

Work out

A study from the University of Bristol found that daily exercisers were more likely to have more energy and a more positive outlook compared to those who didn’t participate in a workout session. A morning workout may be a better match for your body’s hormonal fluctuations and stress levels.

Cortisol is a hormone that keeps you awake and alert. It is widely known as the stress hormone, but it only causes problems when there’s too much or too little of it. Typically, cortisol increases in the morning and drops in the evening. It reaches it’s peak around 8am. Building exercise into your morning can also earn you mental clarity that lasts throughout the day. Increased energy levels, increased focus, better moods, increased activity, and appetite control are among the other benefits.

Write your goals down

Planning your day can help you prepare your mind for the day ahead. It is great to have long-term goals, but it also helps to break them down into daily short-term goals. Many people get weighed down by the magnitude of their goals- they are difficult to accomplish and require advance planning and consistent work over a long period of time.  Planning your day and incorporating actionable goals can make the work less daunting. Be sure to track your progress and hold yourself accountable.

Hydrate

Hydration is a critical aspect of health. It might sound obvious, but stats show that over 80% of people don’t drink enough water throughout the day. Our bodies can become dehydrated at night so starting your day with some water is a good idea. A morning glass has been proven to reduce calorie intake, improve mental health performance and increase energy levels. Try starting your morning with a glass or two of water.

Step outside your comfort zone

Mindset is a big contributor to success; many are afraid to step out of their comfort zones. There are actions you can take that are not related to your task or goals that will help you on a psychological level to reset your mind and train your mind to get rid of fear and increase determination and resolve. One of those things is taking a cold shower in the morning. Aside from the health benefits like healthier and more elastic, young-looking skin and great hair, many successful people swear by it.
