As Christmas trees begin to go up and the sparkly lights start to get switched on, it can only mean one thing. It’s December! However, does that mean you should stop your job search over Christmas?

This year has been a year like no other. A rollercoaster could be one way to describe it. In and out of lockdown, some hiring and unfortunately some redundancies. But the New Year is in sight.

The answer: don’t stop searching! Now is a great time to keep looking for a new role.

Here are some reasons why:

1. Get ahead of the competition

You may be thinking, “I’ll just wait for the New Year”, well so will everyone else. By continuing your job search, you’ll be competing with less competition. As people start to wind down for the holidays, so too will the applications, and the likelihood is that you are more likely to get noticed. Come January, the crowded and competitive market will be back whilst you would have already secured your new role.

2. Companies are preparing for the New Year

Lots of companies have had to delay their hiring plans this year because of Covid-19 and have kickstarted the hiring process in Q4 of this year. Many businesses will favour candidates who are interviewing now and can start in early 2021 so that they have a full team on board ready for the new financial year. Also, as business starts to slow down, December is a good month to hire and train new staff.

3. Contract opportunities are at their peak in December

December year-end is here, and this is typically one of the key times for businesses to hire contractors to support during this busy time. Equally many companies have projects they want to complete before January arrives. This can result in companies looking to hire temporary workers to help finish those projects before the deadline. It can also be a good way to continue to earn on the run-up to the New Year whilst looking for the right permanent role. Take a look at some of the benefits of doing contract work.

4. Christmas positivity

Whilst we know that not everyone celebrates the holiday or looks forward to Christmas, it has been shown that people are happier around the Christmas period. Therefore, some people may be more willing to help you or give you an opportunity. So, take advantage of the Christmas cheer as you never know what may happen. If you are looking for support on you job search, a recruiter can offer a wide range of support for your search, not only securing you a new role. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and pick up the phone

5. Don’t let your job search get overshadowed

As we say hello to the New Year, we welcome back the resolutions. Whilst getting more active may be one, a new career might be another. Make sure you stick to your goals by staying on top of your job search throughout December. If you delay it until the New Year, not only will you be juggling your search with all your other goals, but you could fall behind the competition. Continuing your search will allow you to be one step ahead, whilst the competition will only just be getting started.
